December Wintering Guide: Yule, Slow Living Rituals & December 2025 Cosmic Movements

December Wintering Guide: Yule, Slow Living Rituals & December 2025 Cosmic Movements

December is one of the most enchanting and sacred months of the year, I must admit that personally I’ve started to dislike December purely because of the run up to Christmas and the overwhelm it carries. As I’ve got older and aligned myself more with nature and my body, I found myself yearning to slow down even more than I did when I was younger… but alas! Christmas planning is still here. I have got much better at giving myself pockets of time to listen to my body over the years but this year I’ve started my wintering bucket list which literally forces me to slow down - and it works! I encourage you to create a cosy wintering bucket list filled with hobbies and habits you want to carry out over winter that encourages slowing down and creating moments of stillness. Keep reading for some things I’ve included on my list!

December carries us into the darkest night, which welcomes the deepest rest for nature all around us but, brings the quiet promise of returning light. And whether we consciously choose it or not, our nervous systems crave stillness.

This month invites us into wintering, and with that it brings the energies and actions of reflection, ritual, storytelling, and gentle preparation for what is to come. Within this blog post, I’ll walk you through December folklore, wildlife and nature rhythms to look out for or encourage, cosy seasonal practices and starting your own wintering bucket list, a Winter Solstice baking recipe, the key cosmic events of December 2025, and a grounding monthly ritual to close the year with intention.

December Folklore: The Holly King & The Oak King

Let’s dive into a lovely little story associated with December that comes from Celtic folklore — the tale of the Holly King and the Oak King. These two kings are not enemies which is often depicted in lore tales, but I like the version where they’re dual aspects of nature’s rhythm and work in harmony together.

The Oak King rules the lighter half of the year. He embodies strength, growth, warmth, and the long golden days of spring and summer where growth, abundance and actionable practises thrive.

As the wheel turns toward winter at the summer solstice, the Holly King rises in his evergreen glory but brings with him a protective energy and wisdom. He rules the darker months and guides us into rest, introspection and the unseen realms.

At the Winter Solstice, the Holly King stands at the height of his power on the longest night of the year. Yet in that same moment, the Oak King is reborn. From that point forward, the light slowly begins its return and with it as the Oak King grows in power and the Holly King fades out, he inspires us into growth, setting concious soul-led intentions and taking inspired action.

This folklore tale reminds us that even in our darkest seasons, light is already being born beneath the surface and that rest is an essential part of growth. December is the sacred pause and represents the inhale before the exhale and the space between endings and beginnings.

Wildlife & Nature in December

December may look quiet on the surface and you may think not much is going on, but nature is still very much alive.

With trees stripped bare, birds become more visible so it’s an excellent time for bird watching. You can be sure to see robins and their unmissable orange breast, which what makes robins so strongly associated with winter and Yule. As birds look for food sources over winter you may notice that they come closer to homes and gardens, so  putting out bird food and fat balls as well as water during frosts can turn your garden into a winter sanctuary for them. You may also spot blue tits, wrens, and blackbirds gathering near feeders.

In the garden, everything rests in a dreaming state. But subtle life is still brewing beneath. This is a perfect month for:

• Mulching beds

• Protecting roots from frost

• Clearing mould-harbouring leaf piles

• Preparing soil for spring

Creating a Wintering bucket list

December is a portal back into creativity, nostalgia, and handmade magick so is the perfect time to start your own wintering bucket list! This bucket list should be tailored around slowing down, intentional crafts and hobbies you’ve been putting off because you didn’t have time to start them earlier on in the year. When you’re writing your list, think about romanticising your life and thinking about how you want your life to feel…

Here’s some things you could include on your wintering bucket list:

Candle making or candle dressing with oils, herbs, and sigils

• Reading folklore and fantasy novels

• Winter journaling, year reflection (check out our free seasonal journal prompts to guide you through this season)

• Crafting handmade gifts for Christmas and Yule like herbal bath salts, charm bags, body scrubs, candles, baking and cooking

• Wreath making with evergreen, pinecones, berries, thinking about the magickal properties of each one

Colouring sheets or drawing

• Slow winter home-keeping like washing blankets, refreshing spaces, deep energetic cleans

• Decorating for Yule or Christmas

• Making handmade Christmas tree decorations

• Intention setting for the year ahead, not as goals but as feelings and themes

• Complete a wintery scene jigsaw

Intentional nature walks

• Gardening jobs

Monthly Ritual: The Hearth & Heart Ritual

Here’s a quick and simple ritual for you to perform. This ritual is for releasing anything you’re ready to let go of from this past year and setting intentions for the new year.

You will need:

A candle (white, green, or gold)

• A small bowl of salt

• Paper & pen

• A sprig of evergreen (pine, holly, or rosemary whatever you feel called to)

Ritual Steps:

1. Light your candle thinking about what you’re ready to release. This could be bad habits, people, an experience or emotions.

2. Place evergreen beside it as a symbol of enduring life.

3. Place your finger into the bowl of salt and bring it to your forehead, heart, and palm of your hands whilst saying:

“May my thoughts be clear, my heart be open, and my actions aligned.”

4. Write down three things you’re ready to release from the year.

5. Burn or bury the paper safely.

6. Hold your piece of every green and state aloud three intentions for the coming year.

7. Place the sprig on your altar until the New Moon.

Close with gratitude.

Best Crystals for December Energy

December makes a powerful month for grounding, protection, reflection, and gentle hope. Some of the best crystals for December energy include:

Garnet, for warmth, vitality, and reigniting inner fire during the cold, heavy months

Smoky Quartz, for grounding, emotional release, and protection as the year closes

Clear Quartz, to amplify intentions for the New Year and bring clarity from the winter stillness.

Moonstone is also deeply supportive in December, helping you stay connected to your intuition through the long dark nights and shifting lunar cycles.

Green Aventurine aligns beautifully with Yule and the rebirth of the Sun, symbolising renewal, growth, and quiet abundance.

I love to work with crystals through meditation but you can work with them however you want whether that’s pairing them with rituals, altar placements or even just a pocket talisman can help you feel supported as you move through December’s inward, reflective energy.

However you move through this month, December is here to remind us that it is okay to slow down. This season is not about rushing through to the finish line, but about resting, reflecting and listening to what your body and heart need. Whether that looks like cosy rituals, quiet mornings, creative evenings or simply doing less. Let December be a gentle exhale. The light will return when it is ready and so will you! Enjoy this month and all its festivities 🤍

Lots of love,
Sophie ✨
